Ancient Benin City

The Edo people:The Edo people are the original people and founders of the Benin Kingdom. The Kingdom of Benin began in the 900s when the Edo people settled in the rainforests in Western Africa. By the 14th and 15th centuries they had strengthened and expanded into a powerful empire with an established and powerful monarch and ruler, known as the Oba.

Location:The Kingdom of Benin is located in West Africa along the Niger River stretching from the Niger Delta to the Atlantic Ocean. Benin is the largest of the West African Kingdoms, and is home to more than 48.1 million inhabitants, the majority of which belong to the Edo ethnic group of the Niger Delta. The Benin nation itself spanned a total of 2,209,450 km2 (853,073 sq mi) in landmass as of 1490. Established in 1180, Benin was founded by the Ogisos, and grew to become one of the oldest and most developed states in the Niger Delta region, as well as boasting one of the most advanced civilizations south of the Sahara. The nation became a truly unified and formidable empire under Oba Ewuare 1 in 1413, following the death of his father Orobiru. Extensive trade and exploration of the surrounding regions, as well as the development of science and the arts quickly became priorities of successive Obas who sought to expand the influence of Benin well beyond its borders. The overall greatness of Benin Kingdom is not attributable to any particular Oba, but is rather a result of the dynamic leadership and followership of successive generations of Obas and Benin people who at different times and in different ways contributed to making the Benin Kingdom one of the greatest civilizations in history.
